Pro tips

Use Level of Detail (LOD)

LOD expressions (FIXED, INCLUDE, EXCLUDE) let you compute aggregations at different granularity than the viz. Essential for creating cohort analyses and advanced KPIs.

Parameter Actions

Create dashboard interactivity with parameter actions. Users click on marks to dynamically filter, highlight, or change calculations without using complex filter actions.

Extract for Performance

Convert live connections to extracts (.hyper) for dramatically faster queries. Schedule extract refreshes on Tableau Server/Cloud. Aggregation in extracts further speeds dashboards.

Quick Table Calculations

Right-click any measure → Quick Table Calculation for running totals, YoY growth, percent of total, moving averages, and rank - no formulas needed.

Use Container Layouts

In dashboards, use horizontal and vertical containers instead of tiled layout. Containers make responsive designs that resize proportionally and maintain alignment.

Custom Date Hierarchies

Create custom dates for fiscal years, ISO weeks, or non-standard periods. Right-click date field → Create → Custom Date to define your own calendar logic.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Tableau Desktop, Server, and Cloud?

Desktop is for creating visualizations. Server is self-hosted for sharing dashboards organization-wide. Tableau Cloud (formerly Online) is SaaS - hosted by Salesforce. Public is free for public data only.

Is Tableau free?

Tableau Public is free but all data is public. Tableau Desktop costs $70-75/user/month (Creator license). Viewer licenses for Server/Cloud start at $15/user/month. Students and educators get free Desktop licenses.

Can Tableau handle large datasets?

Yes. Tableau can connect to databases with billions of rows via live connections. Extracts (.hyper format) handle hundreds of millions of rows efficiently. For very large data, use Tableau's query optimization and aggregation.

What data sources does Tableau support?

Tableau connects to 100+ data sources including Excel, CSV, SQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server), cloud platforms (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), Salesforce, Google Sheets, and web data connectors.

How does Tableau compare to Power BI?

Tableau excels at visual exploration and complex analytics. Power BI integrates better with Microsoft ecosystem and is cheaper ($10/user/month). Tableau offers more visualization types and flexibility. Power BI has stronger self-service ETL with Power Query.

Can I embed Tableau dashboards in my website?

Yes. Use Tableau's JavaScript Embedding API or iframe embedding. Tableau Server/Cloud supports embedding with single sign-on. Tableau Public dashboards can be embedded for free.
